A New Start at MAG-O

Esmond Fong is a UX designer, currently working on the MAG-O digital retail team. Esmond joined us on 15/01/18.

After months of deciding of where I wanted to take my career in UX, I finally chose MAG-O. Working for a digital agency, on site at one of the UK’s busiest airports, which focuses on enhancing pre-flight experience through innovative new technology, was an opportunity I simply couldn’t pass up.

The format of the business is just like a start-up - working Agile within cross functional teams in an office space designed with that in mind.

Everything in the office is brand-new, with awesome break out areas and meeting rooms. It also has a usability lab which is essential in my line of work as well as being extremely cool. On my first day, I arrived at my desk with a shiny new, company-issue Macbook pro waiting to be opened!

I was placed in the Retail team because of my past E-commerce experience, and straight away I had lots of work to sink my teeth into. There is quite a bit of overlap between the Creative Design team and UX teams, which means I can put my creative hat back on as well as combining UX knowledge and workflow.

The team itself is still relatively small, but this just means we have more ownership, empowerment and a greater voice on what we want to deliver. I am sat next to another UX Designer and a set of developers, though all the other teams are sat within shouting distance. It’s a great set up for collaborative working.

However, perhaps the best bit about MAG-O is its culture - the people and the pace of the work.

Colleagues are allowed flexible working hours, which is something not many companies are switched onto yet. It’s great knowing that I can choose to start earlier or later depending on my day and it adds to general colleague well-being and productivity.

I look forward to growing my career here at MAG-O – it’s an exciting place to work!
