The start of a career change with MAG-O


During my time working in a position that failed to satisfy my creative interest, I realised it was time for a change and I had to be the one responsible to make it happen.

Back in July 2017 I completed my course at Shillington Graphic Design school with a full printed portfolio ready to hit the creative industry. Following months of interviews and freelancing projects, I chose to accept the offer at MAG-O due to their creative work environment and for the chance to work with more autonomy. The training has been invaluable to my development; with only two months under my belt so far, I have learnt skills in writing for social media and presenting, as well as building upon my graphic design knowledge through plenty of interesting projects (both print and digital).

After arranging some work experience at MAG-O last year, I was lucky enough to be picked as their new Media Intern out of a large pool of candidates to help manage their social media channels, as well as assisting in wider graphic design projects for the group.

I arrived on my first day to a brand-new MacBook Pro waiting at my desk and a list of exciting projects to get stuck into. From day one the team have been more than welcoming, which makes coming to work in the morning all the more worth it.

The work culture is exactly as you’d expect from a digital start up; creative, innovative and collaborative. Teams work closely together to drive performance no matter how different their roles may be within the business, such as the relationship between digital marketing and UX team members.

Changing careers and starting from scratch later in life can be daunting, but with the support and knowledge passed on from the Digital Marketing team, the process so far has been an enjoyable one as I continue to learn and develop by the day.

If you’re thinking of taking the leap into a more fulfilling career path, don’t be scared by the journey, long as it may seem.

Food for thought in New York

A New Start at MAG-O

Esmond Fong is a UX designer, currently working on the MAG-O digital retail team. Esmond joined us on 15/01/18. After months of deciding of where I wanted to take my career in UX, I finally chose MAG-O. Working for a digital agency, on site at one of the UK’s busiest airports, which focuses on enhancing pre-flight experience through innovative new technology, was an opportunity I simply couldn’t pass up. The format of the business is just like a start-up - working Agile within cross functional teams in an office space designed with that in mind. Everything in the office is brand-new, with awesome break out areas and meeting rooms. It also has a usability lab which is essential in my line of work as well as being extremely cool.
